Training portfolio

In addition to exams the main method of assessment is completion of the competencies specified in the training portfolio.

The training portfolio lists the competencies which all trainees in public health should achieve during their training.

Please note: the training portfolio for the pre-August 2007 curriculum differs to that for the professional learning portfolio for the 2007 curriculum.

Both portfolios are available for download from the Faculty of Public Health website, which also provides guidance on collation of evidence or competencies achieved.

Evidence can be in the form of reports (and one report could be used to cover more than one competency), minutes of meetings chaired, teaching/research activity, log books etc.

In general, trainees will need to have a folder/file for each of the competency domains, with a cover sheet outlining why they consider the competency or part of the competency has been achieved, list of the evidence presented and which sub-competency or group of sub-competencies it covers and why. The folder should also include the evidence in the form of reports, etc.

Training contract

It is expected that trainees will negotiate and agree a 'training contact' with trainers. Competency gaps that need to be covered and projects/activities that could cover them within a trainee's time in the placement will need to be discussed, agreed and subsequently reviewed at appropriate intervals with the trainer. The following structure is suggested:

Competency to be addressed Project/activity Evidence it would generate (i.e. report, log book, etc.) Date by which this would be achieved Review date Outcome Comments
